What's the difference between the playstation 3 40gig, 60gig and 80gig?

May be...
  • I am interested in getting the Playstation 3, but I am not sure which one I should get. What's the advantage of having a playstation 3 80 gig or 60 gig compared with the 40 gig? I have heard that the 40 gig does not have as many options as the 60 gig or 80 gig...beyond the extra memory, can you tell me the differences? I don't really care about the memory, but I have also heard that the 60 gig works better as a Blu-Ray Player than the 80 gig. I just want a product that is good and that i'm not overpaying....if the 40 gig is the same as the 60gig or 80 gig, please let me know. Thank you!
  • they all have wifi, ethernet, blu ray support, cd, and dvd, ps1 backward compatible in software emulation.

40gb- 0% support on ps2 games (because they removed both hardware & software), no super audio cd support, two usb ports, and no flash card reader.

60gb- 97% support on ps2 games (because they have hardware "emotion engine"), have super audio cd support, four usb ports, and have flash card reader.

80gb- 75% support on ps2 games (because they removed hardware and just have software emulation) and the rest is the same thing as the 60gb.
  • Get an 80 GB they have more memory and are faster for everything to load.
  • the 40gb doesnt play ps2 games and doesnt flash card readers. and the only difference between the 60 and 80 is that the 60 plays allps2 games and the 80 only plays about 75% of ps2 games
  • well the higher the gig the higher the price. more gig, more memory though...so its up to you. how much memory do u want. u pick
  • 80 gb has more memory and plays around 85% of ps2 games.

60 gb plays all ps2 games and has more memory than the 40 gb but less than the 80 gb.

40 gb can't play any ps2 games and obviously doesn't have the better memory

However if you're planning to go cheap, go for the 40 gb. (you can always buy extra memory for it later, you can upgrade memory by replacing the hard drive which is easy)

    60 gb are discontinued

80 gb are discontinued but are going to come back with a new bundle in June retailing at $500 and coming with dualshock 3 controllers (rumbles and motion sensor) and metal gear solid
  • Besides the hard drive size differences:

40 gb: Cannot and will not play PS2 games. Can play PSX games. Only has 2 USB ports. No emotion engine (PS2's CPU) and no PS2's GPU. No flash drives.

60 gb: Can play almost all PS2 games because it contains the emotion engine and the PS2's GPU. Has 4 USB slots. Has 3 flash drives (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick).

80 gb: Can play most PS2 games, but since it's missing the emotion engine, it has to use software emulation, so games that didn't follow Sony's guidelines may not play correctly on the PS3. Has 4 USB ports. Has 3 flash drives.

The extra gb doesn't do anything for the graphics or gameplay. The gb just lets you store more stuff.
  • the 60gig has been discontinued , Sony does not make it anymore
  • the 40 GB doesn't have flash card readers and cant play PS2 games..but the 60 and 80GB can, though if you want a PS3 to play PS2 games on then try hard to find the 60GB version as it plays all PS2 games but the 80GB version plays about 70%....look on ebay for the 60GB or wait a few months and get the 80GB version with Metal Gear Solid4 and Rumble pack
