Basically, I'm only getting the PS3 because the new GTA IV game is coming out in late April...and it only works on a PS2 or XBOX console.
My question is: do ps2 games work on a ps3? I've heard mixed answers, I'm not sure which is write...my main concern would be if I can play previous grand theft auto games (such as san andreas) on a ps3. If not, it's not too much of a problem as I'll just keep my ps2. But still, if someone could tell me a definate answer as to whether ps2 games work on a ps3 that'd be greatly appreciated :)
Also, DVD's are playable on a ps3, right? :| Judging by the amount of bad reviews I've heard for the ps3 it wouldn't suprise me if it didn't! ;)
The PS3 40GB model does NOT play PS2 games.
The PS3 60GB and 80GB models DO play PS2 games but there are some compatibility issues and not all games will run correctly.
Simple answer: Keep PS2 as well.
BTW, Ignore all the sweeping statements above claiming that all PS3's play PS2 games, that simply isn't true.
Edit: I just rented out "Bullsworth Acedemy" to play on my ps3 and it was a ps2 disc-Worked perfectly!
DVDs r also playable
some play ps2 (60?80 gb)
others dont (40gb)
There are some truly quality titles which owners of the 40GB PlayStation 3 will be missing out on.
The new 40GB version of the PlayStation 3 is definitely making waves in the gamer community - bringing the console down to a more affordable price point whilst still keeping all the fancy functionality of the other PlayStation 3 models. Well, almost all of it.
Gone is the backwards compatibility of the more expensive versions, so 40GB owners will not be able to play any of their PS2 games on the PS3. That fact has divided gamers into two distinct factions - those who, like Tim, only want to play the newest games and enjoy them in all their glory. Or those who, like me, would prefer to be able to play their old games once their old consoles inevitably break down (but who can't afford to break the bank on a more expensive PS3).

DVD'S CAN BE PLAYED ON ALL CONSOLES.
PS2 GAMES:
40GB=NO ITS 400$
60GB+YES BUT YOU CAN'T REALLY GET IT ANYMORE
80GB=YES ITS 500$
Both 360, Wii, AND Ps3 have it
and yes, u can play dvds, cds, (everything thats a cd) on Ps3 and Xbox360
There are currently 4 types of Ps3's that have ever been made:
The 20gb: It plays all ps1,ps2,ps3 games, Bluray Discs, and DVDs
The 60gb: Best one ever made, Wireless internet, media card ports, full backwards compatibility with Ps1 and ps2 games, and plays Dvd and Bluray Discs.
the 40gb: The not so great model... its cheap, but has no memory card ports, no support for ps2 games, and i dont think it has wireless.
the 80gb: Its ok, but a 60 gb is a better buy. The 80gb is able to play dvds. bluray. ps1. and 80% of all Ps2 games.
Overall the 60 gb is the best, if you dont need wireless, then get the 20gb and buy a bigger hard drive.
Find out what size/model the ps3 is you are buying, before you consult the internet :P then we can help more
as it has been pointed out by those who really know this answer:
20GB plays PS1 games and most PS2 games
60GB plays PS1 games and most PS2 games
80GB plays PS1 games and limited PS2 games
40GB plays PS1 games and plays no PS2 games.
so if they're selling you a 40GB, pass on it if you were planning on playing any PS2 games on it, because they won't work and they NEVER will. there have been rumors of purchasing and downloading games through Sony eventually, but again, they're rumors. not sure how much truth there is behind them.
