Can PS3 output Blu-ray threw component cables?

May be...
  • My dads 65" TV does not have HDMI (older HDTV). We were planning to use component cables to watch blu-ray on it.

It says on the back of the box that blu-ray can only be output threw HDMI, does this mean if you dont have a HDMI TV you cant watch blu-ray threw the PS3?

    thanks
  • Component does support 480i, 720i/p, and 1080i/p, so yes. Video wise, you'll be fine. Audio is a BIT of a different story. If your receiver supports both bit-stream AND PCM, you will be just fine. PCM is the important one for Blu-Ray. If your receiver does NOT support PCM, then you'll be missing some audio elements; however it's usually negligible.
  • Yes you can watch Blu-Ray though component cables (red, blue, green).

Not to be mistaken for composite (yellow)

The only downside (but not really) is that component cables can only go up to 1080i.

But unless you have a 46"+ 1080p tv, with blu-ray it won't matter.
  • Yes, blu ray will be in HD through component, but you will not be able to enjoy full 1080P uncompressed HD content via component. But judging from the fact that your dad's tv doesn't have HDMI, it probably isn't 1080P. So lack of HDMI really doesn't matter.(let me guess, it's an old rear-projection dinosaur lol)
  • The PS3 will not output 1080p over component, because very very few TVs will accept 1080p over component.

That's doesn't mean you can't watch Blu-Ray movies on it. It does mean that any copy-protected Blu-Ray movie (last I heard, they still haven't started enabling the copy protection on most of them) will output in only 480p (regular DVD resolution).
  • "I know this is an unrelated answer. But maybe it'll be of interest to you. It's not a SCAM though. I've got mine earlier this morning."
