How can I hook up my iPod to my PS3?

When I try to hook it up through the USB port, it charges,butyou cannot tell which song you are playing until after you play it.

I tried doing this on my mates 40GB PS3 and it froze for a while then played the very 1st track. Not sure why but it was resolved with the link present in this comment.
