PS3 or 360?? Please Help!!?

May be...
  • I'm finally getting a 3rd gen but I'm conflicted. I'm leaning towards PS3 because of the Blue Ray aspect but I've been told that Xbox Live is much better than PS3 online. But don't you have to pay for Xbox Live? 360 has a better game library but I've been told that it's reached it's limits and has nowhere to go but down and PS3 hasn't even reached it's potential yet. Is that true? And there are so many versions of each. 360 and Elite for Xbox and the 40, 60, and 80g PS3s. What's the pros and cons for all of them. I can't decide or even figure this out. Please help with good info and you'll get points.

I'm so lost. Don't you kinda miss the days of SNES?

    PS3 or 360?? Please Help!!!

    thnx
  • Here's my take on it, in a nutshell...

360 currently has a larger library of games, but the PS3 is catching up. Many games nowadays are multiplatform, meaning they can be purchased for either console like: GTA IV, Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, etc. So, what should really sway your buying decision are exclusive games and the consoles features itself.

PS3 has Blu-ray going for it, as well as built-in wifi, free online play (you're correct: Xbox Live charges $50/year to be able to play online). PS3 also has a built-in web browser, Dualshock 3 rumble controllers with Sixaxis motion sensors, bluetooth headset/keyboard/mouse,etc support, Linux operating system, HDMI 1.3 (Xbox only has HDMI 1.2), Folding@Home which helps research the cure for cancer, PSP Remote Play (LocationFree = Slingbox, PlayTV = Tivo), standard laptop hard drive (easily swappable with a larger laptop drive, if necessary), and all versions except the 40GB model have backwards compatibility for playing PS2 and some PS1 games (20GB, 60GB, 80GB), dedicated gaming servers, 0.02% failure rate (Xbox 360 has a RROD = Red Ring of Death, which at one point was a 33% failure rate -- 1 out of 3 Xbox had a chance of dying on you) .

The Xbox 360 has a good online service which you're paying $50/year for. In-game messaging system and achievements/gamerscore (PS3 will have those at later time for free with the release of PSHome and In-game XMB). Extended 3-year warranty to cover RROD.

In terms of exclusives games coming up, for the PS3 you'll get: Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII, LittleBigPlanet, God of War 3, Socom Confrontation, Haze, Motorstorm 2, Heavenly Sword 2, inFAMOUS, Eight Days, Wipeout HD, Twisted Metal, Heavy Rain, The Agency, The Getaway, Crysis, plus much more...

Xbox 360 will get Gears of War 2, Too Human, Banjo Kazooie, Halo Wars, Viva Pinata 2, etc.
  • ps3 online may not have peaked yet, but regular firmware updates and great games mean it's the best. exclusives such as uncharted and metal gear solid 4 mean a great game.

the only problem i can think of with the ps3 is the price tag. but get a good bundle and your set!

as for the xbox, it seems like a cheaper version of the ps3 with a SEPERATE dvd drive and a slightly better live service! i would get a ps3, after the red ring fiasco, you want to break your xbox. i reckon ps3 is much better.
  • i already forgot how many times a DAY people ask the same question...but it's super interesting how when they are typing the question ...they can't see that there's already like 1000 of them......(sight)...any way...GET A PS3, DON'T WAST YOU MONEY IN AN STUPID XBOX
  • get a 360 elite! best console out imo, has 120gb hdd hidefinition cd reader and HDMI port!

also can dl games like doom ! the 1st 1:P hehe
  • get a ps3. online is free. bluy-ray, a good collection of games coming this year, its durable (unlike xbox), its quiet, and its shiny and beautiful...do i need to go on??
  • 360, it can run longer and don't freeze in the middle of a game. plus it has more games available for it
  • I go for 360 its got some glitches but its fricken awesome
  • lol! snes rules!
  • My friend has both and the 360 is much better! Trust Me!
  • Xbox live is free but to a point. I havent signed up for it because i read that if you want to do deathmatch or mulitplayer to have to pay the monthly fee. Unless if something has changed recently.

Plus side to PS3 is the blue ray since the blue ray dvd players run about 400 to 500. When getting PS3, you are getting the blue ray dvd player, game console and other stuff for close the same price. I do not have a PS3 yet but i do have a 360 and i hardly mess with it. But overall i say it depends on what you want.

I know at one time the PS3 had some problems playing PS2 games but they may have fixed that by now.
  • The xbox 360 has a bigger game library, but that doesn't mean better. And its advantage is shrinking. It's like two rolling snowballs, where one got a head start, at first it will be significantly bigger, but eventually both snowballs get huge and there's no real difference.

The xbox is indeed reaching its plateau of game quality. It's a 3-core'd pc-type architecture and there are few development techniques that haven't been applied to it. I usually hear numbers like 80% tapped, around. The ps3 on the other hand has 6 fast processors configured symmetrically around a 7th, all of them are 3.2 Ghz. This super-parallel configuration has huge potential for speed particularly with a programming method called streaming.

Besides that, the ps3 has a floating-point capacity of 2 Tflops while the xbox has 1 Tflop. The ps3 has less system RAM but higher memory bandwidth because its RAM runs at 3.2 gHz. It's a more efficient machine for running 3d game engines. It's hard to quantify but most of what I've heard says the ps3 is less than halfway maxed out so far.

ps3 has got free online with psn, Home on the way, motion sensing controllers, a web browser, and HDMI and wireless on all models currently sold (only the old 20gb lacked wireless) The 60 and 80 have card readers and 4 usb ports, the 40 has no card readers and 3 usb ports.

If you want to develop games, there is a version of the Torque engine by Garage Games that you can but and make games that, if they pass testing, you can sell for xbox on xbox live. That's about the only thing that I wish were on ps3.

and yeah xbox live does cost money.
