yes it is High Definition, but it doesn't play HD DVDs, it plays Blu-Ray DVDs for the High Definition films. Yes it will also play normal DVDs

Honestly I don't think I have found a file format or disk (that I use anyway) that my PS3 has not played. It supports full HD Natively (1080p)
