What is the best GB PS3 I can buy?

May be...
  • Don't say "Xbox 360 is better" or "Get an Atari" I am pretty sure I don't want a 40GB but I have no clue what the differences are. The games I am wanting to buy are Call of Duty 4 and GTA4 so far. If I need to provide any additional information please tell me but make sure it's stuff that I can answer and not like a bunch of files and cords and chips and stuff because I am not a technology wizard.
  • The best version is 60GB version, because it plays PS2 games (20GB plays them too, but it has smaller HDD and doesn't have wi-fi and memory card reader). Both 20GB and 60GB are no longer manufactured. The best version now is 80GB, it plays PS2 games too (but not as many as North American 60GB). 40GB doesn't play PS2 games at all and it doesn't have memory card reader.
  • The only models currently in production are the 40gb and the 80gb. The 80gb is not available in Europe.

The 80gb can play most PS2 games, has 4 USB ports, flash card readers (for camera's etc), and SACD support (if you don't know what this is you don't need it).

The 40gb will play no PS2 games, has only 2 USB ports (you can buy a USB hub to add more), has no flash card readers, and does not support SACD. There are also the obvious differences in HDD size.

The 80gb bundle comes with MGS4 and dual shock 3 controllers (which rumble), while the 40gb comes with no game and regular sixaxis controllers (no rumble).

Everything else is the same. They play PS3, PS1, bluray, DVDs, an CDs exactly the same no matter what model you are using.

Basically if you want to play PS2 games get the 80gb. If you don't care about PS2 games or Metal Gear Solid 4, get the 40gb.
  • The 20GB and 60GB models (America and Japan only) were able to play ALL PS2 games, but are now discontinued.

If you live in America or Japan, and you really must have full PS2 compatibility (rather than the 80% compatibility of the 80GB model), then try and track down a 60GB model. Otherwise the 80GB is fine.
  • PS3 40GB : $400 - Not Backwards Compatible

    PS3 80GB : $500 - Backwards Compatible - Includes Metal Gear Solid 4

    COD4 and GTA4 : $60 Each.
  • The Metal Gear Solid 4, 80 Gig bundle, or just a normal 80 gig
  • The Metal Gear Solid 4, 80 Gig bundle is the best version to get right now.

SACD: if you don't know what it is... you should read up on it, for instance at PS3 SACD FAQ.
