Playing burned PS2 games on my PS3.

I own a 80 GB PS3 recently bought from the US. is it possible for me to actually play burned PS2 games on the console? I have a internet connection if it requires me to downloaded something. the thing is, so far I tried putting a burned CD, nothing happens - but judging from the extra additions to Audio and Video I know it acknowledges it has a CD inside.

PS3 has a very serious protection against hacking.
