Will upgrading the 80 gb playstation 3 void the backwards compatibility?

May be...
  • i have the 80 gig ps3 and online i've read that it has backwards compatibility but its software emulation. What does that mean? Does it mean that if i were to upgrade my hard drive to a bigger one that it will backwards compatibility? i really would like the answer to this.
  • The backwards compatibility on the PS3 is controlled by the firmware. It's not stored on the hard drive, but stored on the motherboard within flash memory.

Replacing the hard drive won't remove backwards compatibility since the hard drive isn't needed for it, and installing a new hard drive won't copy any of the software needed for backwards compatibility..
  • the hard drive has NOTHING to do with backwards compatibility. so changing the hard drive in a system that has it will not change compatibility. upgrading the hard drive on a 40GB that has no backward compatibility will not change the compatibility.
  • Emulation means basically that it will make one device act like another, in this case, the PS3 like a PS2. Changing the HDD will not affect your ability to do this. As pointed out by another answerer pointed out, it is part of the Firmware, not stored on the HDD.
  • No, just make sure you keep the original HDD in case you have to send it in.

Otherwise Sony encourages you since its in the manual how to lol
  • changing the hdd will do nothing to the backwards compatibility because backwards compatibility is stored on flash memory on the motherboard
