Will socom be worth it?

May be...
  • i mean the only reason i'm looking into buying this game is because of the $50 headset that comes along with it. i mean will it be a lot like MGS4? because i want to get LBP but this game only looks mediocre, especially comparing it to MGS4. and i don't have enough cash to buy both LBP (or another game) and socom. the only plus is the free headset.

so i ask you. will socom be a good game or will it be worth it. also will the free headset be a limited time offer, or if i buy it at any date, will i get the headset with it?
  • You could always buy the bundle and then sell the game if you don't like it and keep the headset. You really don't need a $50 headset when a $20 works just as good. My headset is $20 and it's just as good if not better than my friends $45 headset. I would recommend waiting until it comes out and reading the reviews on it first. LBP is going to be awesome and almost everyone that has played it thinks so to. Socom will most likely just be another first person shooter.
  • The game is online only and I guarantee you that it will be better than MGO

It also comes with that super awesome headset so your paying $40/50 for a headset and getting a game with it for $20/10.

I wouldn't take it over LBP though
  • LBP is worth it but you have to know that Socom is not a complete game. Its just multiplayer .
  • it will be worth it but LBP will be worth it more just wait till it's price drops and get LBP
  • yeah it look pretty good. The graphics aren't that good but it still should be a good game.I don't think it will be like MGS4.The online looks okay but at least you get free head sets.
  • yes
  • No. Socom as an online-only game will be a sad failure. It's not meant to be.

Socom was the "official" first online ps2 game. Sony pushed it to be a big game with lots of server space and bandwidth, so that it could handle the players. However the game was still designed more as a single-player, mission-based tactical shooter. It had neat innovations like voice-recogntion, and a sort of interesting storyline and adaptive AI, but since it was designed around single-player, it didn't fit online. In particular, character movement was slow and unresponsive. Hit crouch, and your character would shrug, shift around and 3 seconds later would complete the crouch. Hit triangle again to lay down, and you'd be prone 3 seconds later. weapon switch was complicated as well; except for your 2 quick-switch weapons, you had to scroll through all the weapons to find what grenade you wanted to throw, etc, then when you throw, it takes several seconds for your aim arc to get to a good distance. All those things are ok for a single-player mission. But for online multiplayer they are ridiculous.

I didn't try playing Socom online until I'd already played better games like Star Wars Battlefront. I tried Socom 2 only to find that it still lacked the speed and quick response necessary to be any fun in multiplayer. Socom has just always been stuck in that rut.

Now Socom always did have its fans for online, in fact it was huge; but that's because it was the only big online ps2 game with tons of dedicated servers at the time. Eventually that changed. Battlefield drew a lot of players away, it was slow but not nearly as slow as Socom.

An online game doesn't have to be as fast as Quake to be fun, in fact the super fast ones are even worse. But slow ones are no good either. An online-only Socom is like getting a pizza without the sauce or the cheese or the toppings, just the crust.

Compare the great online ps3 game, Warhawk. Lighting fast? No. But nowhere near slow, and most important of all, responsive. And the servers never lag.

btw I really wish game developers could think of something to push for ps3 besides remakes of old ps2 titles, like Socom and Metal Gear. And remakes of Xbox titles, like Haze. It's not a ps2 dammit. That's why everybody should buy Little Big Planet. Reward them, not the guys who are bringing us Killzone 2.
