How can I play MGS1 through MGS3 on my PS3?

May be...
  • I have a 80GB recently purchased and it doesn't work. It didn't work on my old 40GB also. Any idea?
  • Firstly, the 40GB model PS3s can't playback PS2 games of any kind, nor can the second gen 80GB (CECHK01) models. However, the first gen 80GB (CECHE01) models could play most of the PS2 games by using software emulation. And as you may have guessed, the 160GB models (any version) aren't backward compatible with PS2 software. Hats off to Sony for screwing this up for PS2 gamers, btw.

Strangely, the first PS3s, the 20GB model, can playback PS2 games, as can both versions of the 60GB models. These models contain the superior hardware emulation of the Emotion Engine found on the PS2. Sony claims it wanted to cut production costs on the PS3 by exluded PS2 hardware emulation, though. My thoughts are that Sony really wants to put the PS2 and its software to pasture so that they can sell more PS3s and PS3 software.
  • You must have the 80gb with only 2 usb ports. And 40gb isn't backwards compatible. You need either the 60gb or the new 80gb with 4 usb ports.

Just in case if you do have the 4 usb ports; it is only a limited backwards compatibility so not all ps2 games will play on a backwards compatible system.
  • Why not just by a PS2? It's not like the PS3 is going to make the games any better and from what I've seen the graphics on backwards compatible PS3s playing PS2 games is actually worse than just playing the game on the PS2 in the first place. The PS2 is relatively cheap now a days, especially if you find someone who is willing to give theirs away because they just bought a PS3 or Xbox 360 and have no desire to play older games.

Other than that do a search on youtube - there are ways to get things to work, it just involves the possibility of ruining your new gaming station.
  • What happened to your 40GB version?

Did you know that they are releasing a 160GB version coming soon?

The 80GB version is not backward compatible.

Though it still may be able to play PlayStation 1 games, but not PS2.
  • NOT ALL PS3s ARE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE WITH PS2. ESP THE 40GBs. THE NEW 80GB THAT YOU HAVE IS THE SAME AS THE 40GB THAT YOU HAVE BEFORE, ONLY WITH HIGHER HD. THE ONLY 80GB THAT PLAYS PS2 IS THE ONE THAT IS BUNDLED WITH MGS4.
  • You need to do research before you purchase man. The new 80gb and the 40gb are not backwards compatible. After the MGS4 bundle they stopped the B/C 80gb. The PS1 game will work but not the PS2 games.
  • Wow...thats strange! I bought the MGS4 Bundle and it plays all my Metal Gear games, including MGS1!
