Question about Playstation 3?

May be...
  • I would like to purchase a Playstation 3 80 gb version and hook it up to my hd tv. My questions are...

Do you have to use an hdmi cable to get a hd picture or can you use componant cables?

    Thanks in advance.

How big of a difference would there be between hdmi and componant? Would I tell the difference? I already have a blue ray player hooked up with hdmi so i would only be using the ps3 for playing games.

I think the only cable the ps3 comes included with is an a/v cable. Is that right?

I saw Playstation hdmi cable for $70. Do I have to use that one or can I use any hdmi cable? Componant cable only $25.

  • There is hope. Don't buy the overpriced HDMI cable from Best Buy or Walmart or any retail store, find them online at a store like newegg.com where you can get 10 feet of HDMI for 8 bucks.

Now for the actual difference, there are essentially three different ways to connect a PS3, component also known as RCA, composite also known as RGB, and HDMI. HDMI is the best not only because it achieves the highest quality picture with digital technology but HDMI is video AND audio. That's only one cable needed to connect your PS3 to your HD TV. Composite cables can give you fairly high quality around 720p. The sad truth is that most games don't even achieve 1080p the highest resolution the PS3 can output.

All in all, HDMI is not as expensive as you think it is, and yes it is the best. RCA cables don't even come close.
  • You may use either component or HDMI cables to get an HD picture. Component can go up to 1080p resolution but HDMI has better sound quality. You can just choose from those by your own preferences. (In my opinion, component is the better deal because you can find it for cheap and you're only playing games.) To answer your second question, yes the PS3 only comes with composite cables. In other words, the lowest definition possible. To answer your third question about the HDMI cables, I'll say that you can use any cable. I've had experience with this and any cable works, some are just cheaper or more expensive than others. In this case it's okay to buy the cheapest thing on the shelf.

If you can't find an HDMI cable for under $25 then go with component. You always want to go with cheaper and personally I don't really care about the sound as much as the picture.
  • There's a big difference in quality it should be in this order from great to worst visual in cables HDMI>component>S-video> You may want to check what your HDTV supports most games will only support 720p at the most. Component cable only supports up to 480i on a regular TV set so you need to get an HDMI cable.

If your getting HDMI cables there's no need to buy overpriced ones they're all the same quality don't buy the overpriced monster cables. Monoprice.com gives you a great selection of length for cables at low prices
  • if u do buy this system, watch out. if u bust it open it releases pure concentrated evil. you have been warned!
