Will sony and more importantly is it possible that a firmware update will give me compatability with ps2 games?

May be...
  • As far as i knew (i bought my ps3 knowing full well it did not have backwards compatibility) the ones that did have compatibility had a set of 2 emulator chips (emulating a PS2 GPU) that gave it backwards compatibility with PS2 games. Will sony and like i said is it even possible to make the PS3 backwards compatible through a firmware update?

it seems to me (and im in the process of learning to prepare to go to college for game design so i can become a designer) hat you could manipulate the PS3's massive dual processors to emulate a PS2 GPU.

but i don't know for sure. I want a strait answer from someone to tell me if this is possible and if they will release it so i don't have to keep my hopes up only to hear nothing.

    THANKS!

  • "If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "

that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...

so the answer to your questions is no.
  • No. No firmware update or software update will help. And as long as the PS2 is still selling well, Sony would rather you buy a slim PS2.

At certain times, the PS2 GPU can actually process faster than the PS3 GPU so the PS3 could run hotter than normal with the addition of PS2 compatibility. I hear its an issue with the first three PS3 models that supported PS2. Doesn't sound like graphics are improved all that much either when playing them on a PS3. Just use a PS2.
  • Technically speaking - if Sony wanted current PS3 versions (with no PS2 hardware) to play PS2 games - it'll require tons of time and money, because every single PS2 game will need it's own, unique emulator. Can you imagine how much it'll cost? May be (and it's just my guess) Sony will do it for some greatest of the greatest PS2 hits in the future.
  • well, sony stated that they do not plan at all on making current PS3s compatible with PS2 games, although, I find it weird that such a powerful console is not able to emulate PS2 disks without some crazy chip.... hmmmph
