Im about to buy a ps3. But before I do i want to know if it will play ps1&2 games. I heard diffrent anwsers.?

May be...
  • I went into wal mart and they said it would not. But then I went into gamestop and they said it would. I don't know anyone who has one personaly so I really don't know. Before I lay down 5 hundred bucks I want to be as well informed as I can.
  • Ok, there have been 4 different PS3 systems released in the market. All of them have varying abilities to play PS1 and PS2 titles. The best way to tell the difference between each system is to know what the size of the hard drive is.

The 20 GB and 60 GB systems play 99% of all PS1 and PS2 games. The 40 GB system plays PS1 games but NO PS2 games. The 80 GB system plays most PS1 and PS2 games.

The 20 GB and 60 GB systems are very rare at this point and hard to find. They have the same exact backwards compatibility though. The system that both meets your needs and has the best availability is the 80 GB system. Go to this website to see which of your games will work on the 80 GB system: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Co...

My hope is that all of your games will work on the 80 GB system. Once you check to see that all or most of your games work on the 80 GB system, go on ahead and pick it up at whatever store has it. Hope that helped.
  • it will play all the previous ps games because it has worked for me
  • it plays all ps1 and ps2 games just liek the ps2 plays ps21 games
  • the 40gig will not (not backwards compatible).

    the 80 gig will.
  • Depends which model, the 40GB model will play PS1 games but wont play PS2 games or Super Audio CD's.

If you purchase the 80gb model, it can play PS1/PS2 games and Super Audio CD's plus you get 4 usb ports, memory slot readers and a bigger hdd
  • Depends on which ps3 it is 40 gig ps3 cant play ps2 games but plays ps1 games , all the other ps3 play both ps1 and ps2 games .

    p.s : sony stopped making the 20 and 60 gb ps3 .
  • the 20gb and 40gb models wont but the 60gb and 80gb will play them..
  • Ok. lets make this as clear as possible because Sony is/has confused so many people regarding the PS3 with so many models.

At launch in November 2006, Sony offered two PS3 models: A 20GB and a 60GB model ! Both of these came equipped with the PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU installed on board meaning these two models were near 100% Backwards Compatible with nearly a 85%-100% rate !

Ok, in 2007, Sony decided that due to lack of interest in the 20GB and due to production costs for the 60GB model, they would end production of these two models and bring out 2 other models. Those being the 40GB (comes with a copy of "Spiderman 3" blu-ray dvd movie) and the 80GB models which comes with a copy of the PS3 hit game, "Motorstorm".

The 40GB model is the weakest of all versions of the PS3 as it doesn't have Backwards Compatibility and it only has two USB ports !

The just recently discontinued 80GB model had all the bells and whistles but with a twist, it would only play roughly 75%-85% of PS2 games due to Sony opting to remove the PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU and going with a software emulator program that was programmed to "mimic" the PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU. Due tho this, the 80GB was a hit and miss in terms of which PS2 games would or wouldn't play !

Sony just recently announced yet another model of the PS3 ! It's an 80GB model that'll come bundled with the Dual Shock 3 controller and a copy of "Metal Gear Solid: Guns Of The Patriot" , one of the most anticipated PS3 games to date !

The pricing for these models were/are is as follows: 20GB was priced at $499.99, the 60GB was priced at $599.99, the current 40GB is priced at $399.99 and the 80GB was/is priced at $499.99 if you can still find one !

ToysRUs' website had some 80GB models in stock but I don't know how many !

    Hope this helps !

P.S. I'd be patient and wait for the 80GB MGS: GOTP bundle due out sometime in late summer ! It'll be worth the wait !
