There are 6 phillips case screws, small ones. Depending on the problem it is easy to open the ps2 controller and fix most problems. A few things, like components being fried, can't be fixed.
When you get the controller open, study it for a while before moving anything. Look at the two rumble motors, and see how they're fitted into plastic seats built into the case. If your dualshock won't rumble, the fix is as simple as re-soldering the wire back to the rumble motor.
If you need to fix the buttons, hold the top half upside-down and lift the circuit board away from it. You'll be able to see the magnet pads that the buttons press down on, and the corresponding sensors on the circuit board that the magnets get close to. Ever wonder how pressure sensitive buttons work? That's how. It's how close that magnet gets to the sensor.
Most other physical defects can be fixed pretty easily. some things can also be fixed by transplantin g a part from a ps1 controller.
A ps3 controller is much harder to open up or fix, though I have done it I hope I never have to again.
If not, buy a new one I'm afraid!
call your local gamestop & ask them
