Ps3 virus vulnerability?

May be...
  • How protected is the ps3 online service? Is there any anti-virus software like on pc's?
  • There operating system (or whatever you want to call it) is not as easily accessable of them of a normal PC and someone would have to specifically create one so theres not much chance.
  • Ps3's cannot get PC viruses because they are of different builds. Who knows maybe some1 has created a ps3 virus.
  • There are no viruses out there that can affect the ps3's Operating system. However if you are that worried there is a protection on it that you have to turn on under tools in the web browser.
  • It is impossible to hack a ps3 running on its own OS. The XMB operating system is rooted in the hardware, in particular its use of the hypervisor is hardwired in the hardware. There is no way to hijack the ps3's hypervisor, and no way to hijack any part of its operating system.

When a ps3 runs linux, it would be possible to get into the linux partition from a remote location if its security is very deficient. But there are no significant viruses targeting linux installations. Besides that, it would only be able to affect the linux partition of the hard drive, and only those hardware functions that OtherOS is allowed to access, because OtherOS operates in a virtualized environment which is still restricted by the hypervisor.

If you don't like the PS Store having your bank-card information stored, you can tell it to not save it and instead ask you for the info every time you buy something. It is pretty well impossible for anything but a ps3 to access the ps store as a ps3. If there is anything to worry about there, it would be somebody getting your account info, and creating login of your account on their ps3, then using it to rip you off by buying games, or reading your PSN correspondence. People who trade account info to trade games don't realize what a huge risk they're taking.
