How do you turn on a PS3 for the first time?

May be...

When I hit the PS button on the controller 4 red lights flash on and then off again. The PS3 remains on standby only.

just press the button that is next to the red light when the PS3 is on standby. you might have to connect your controller to the PS3 via a USB cable.

Um you flick the the switch at the back of the PS3 itself, there should be a red light on the console,



Then push down on a green like icon below the disc tray that looks like this [ / O
