1) check your memory level - if it's at max try deleting some videos or game demo's etc... whatever you have saved you don't want anymore.
2) check to see how dirty it is inside - call of duty 4 is a bit of a demanding game on the system (not that the ps3 cant handle it) but if it's excessivly dusty inside it may be heating up and freezing
3) sometimes a good hard shut down (manually hold down the power button on the console) and a restart can do it a lot of good. Or you can reset it.
4) check for scratches or anything wrong with the disc. I'd do this first before you assume that it's the consoles fault. 9 times out of 10 it's the disc that has problems.
Sony charges $150 for out of warranty repairs, and I found a guy local here in PA who charges $50-125 for repairs, depending on parts and extent of repair (and even matches Sony's 90-day warranty to boot!). He felt confident the freezing problem was in no way related to the burnt transistor, but rather to a bad code in the firmware.
He's still working on it, but he seemed pretty confident it was the firmware.
