Can i play Some (very small %) PS2 games on my 40gb PS3?

May be...
  • O.K. i already know what almost everybody says and thats that the 40gb ps3 has no backwards compatibility. With that said i've read on other forums that some people have been able to play a few games (like 10% of ps2 games) on their 40gb ps3. Is this true or is it BS. Also if you've been able to... what games?
  • Unfortunately, you cannot. The 40GB is ill-equipped. The 40GB lacks the graphics processor that was used in the PS2. This is a necessity for gameplay.

The reason why the PS3 cannot be modified to play PS2 games is because Sony locked the operation of the units GPU so it just plays PS3 games.

as far as the other systems are concerned......

20GB PS3(now defunct): the unit had full hardware support that included a PS2 graphics processor.

60GB PS3: this unit has full hardware support to include the GPU used to read PS2 games

80GB PS3: This unit is shipped with the PS3 graphics processor unlocked so it can be used with a Sony-released PS2 game emulator

These features were stripped from the 40GB model to save on the price point and eventually consumer cost.
  • As far as I know the 40gb doesn't have backwards compatibility with PS2. It can, however, play PSone games.

20, 60, and 80gb models are backwards compatible with the 20gb and 60gb being the most efficient because they have the PS2's Emotion Engine built in.

    Good Luck on your quest.
  • None of my old PS2 games would play on it. Sony has always said that the 40gig model is not backwards compatible to PS2.

interestingly enough the 40 gig model will run PS1 games. I have the original Gran Turismo, the first one, playing on my system right now. It displays in a 4:3 format on my 16:9 tv so there are black bars at the sides. It amazing how dated it looks compared to the new GT5 Prologue.
  • Yes, you are able, but only very few. It's like playing PS1 games on a PS2. Some will play, and some will not. I would contact the company directly and listen to what they have to say. Also, you can always upgrade your PS3 in the back with more memory. My cousins have done it and I have even done it on my PS2. Simply, for everyone out there, I wouldn't buy the 40GB PS3 to begin with.
  • BS. The 40gb PS3 does NOT have the software or hardware inside to play PS2 games.

You could still play PS1 games.
