80 GB PS3 Backwards compatibility?

May be...
  • Recently Sony announced they were lowering the price of the 80GB PS3 to $399 sometime before Christmas. Is this the same 80GB model that has the software backwards compatibility?

The reason I ask is because I read an article saying that this was to replace the 40GB PS3 model and that model doesnt have BC.
  • The upcoming "Core PS3" with an 80GB HDD, is basically the 40GB, with a bigger HD. It will not have 4 USB (only 2), no Flash Card Readers, and no Backwards Compatibilty. All Sony are basically doing, is switching the HDD for a bigger one, and are keeping the price the same.

    Add on - Scotty - the current 80GB PS3, has only 80% backwards compatibilty - not 99%
  • i've not heard a great deal about this but i'd go with what some of the other people are saying about it basically being the 40GB with an 80GB HDD instead.

p.s. the 40GB CAN play PS1 games all PS3s can its only PS2 games that some do and some don't.
  • the new 80gig version is not backwards compatible, you will not be able to play any PS1/PS2 games on it. The have removed the Emotion engine from it just like the 40 gig.

    Seems like "Scotty doesnt know"
  • The "new" 80 GB is going to basically be the 40 GB excluding the HDD capacity.

The 80 GB is going to come with 2 USB ports, no BC with PS2 games, no flash card readers, etc. Just like the 40 GB
  • theyre just giving the 40gb version an upgrade. the new cheaper 80gb will have all the features of the 40gb without ps2 backwards compatibility
  • this site will give you a playstation 3 just for completing some quick online tasks! really recommend it, especially if you're broke but really want a ps3 (like me).
  • Should be. Every 80 gb should be 99% backwards compatible. Buy it, you wont regret it.
  • its just more memory, all the features that 40 had now will be there when they upgrade to 80gb.. So basically nothing will change, it will just be about the memory getting higher..
  • no, it is just an upgrade from the 40 gb model. its the EXCACT same as the 40 gig just has double the memory
