With that being said, you basically get a computer with the PS3 that you don't get with the Blu-Ray. Obviously you can view photos and watch videos on both, but the PS3 allows you to save photos and videos on the hard drive, you can access the internet from the PS3, and for some odd reason if you ever wanted to, you can play games.
Until Blu-Ray players drop their prices a significant margin below the PS3, the PS3 is the better product, especially considering they are the same price. Also, if for some odd reason you ever wanted to sell it, you are going to get more money from the PS3 then you will the Blu-Ray player.
If I only really needed it to watch movies and didn't play games, I would still get the PS3 cause you actually get more, not less.
As a movie watcher, the PS3 features can still appeal to you. Sony are updating their Playstation Store with a movie section. Even if you like watching Blu-Ray movies, you can use the PS3 to buy movies online, download them onto the PS3 and watch them without having to leave the house. They'll also be doing this with television shows.
On top of that, the PS3 will also gets the newest Blu-Ray features first through firmware updates and there is no way to really tell if Sony will bother to update older players once newer and better players come out. That's the problem with standalone players, better and eventually cheaper ones come out. At least with the PS3 you can do more than just movies, and that doesn't mean playing games.
