So basically ur more or less right it saying that it wasn't necassary to leave it uncompressed, it was either through laziness. or becuase they wanted that tiny bit of better sound/picture (we're talking fractions FYI) or even because they wanted to say that it was that big to sell more copies, who knows but bottom line is no it wasnt necassary.
And just for fun if it was released on 360 it'd prolly be about 3 discs which are DVD9s, after compression.
Dont let fanboys point you in the wrong direction.
Hope that helped.
EDIT:
Oh and the video in this gfame are not required to be compressed because they are running on the game engine and aren't streamed movies which means it's all being rendered in real time using the games graphics. Games With FMVs and pre rendered cutscenes it would need alot of memory then as the above stated.
As for compression, they tried to leave as much uncompressed as possible. They would have needed a big disc because of all the video, which they would have needed to compress with the latest HD codecs anyway. Uncompressed video, even if It's non HD is massive, so they would have used the compression for video.
The audio however was left uncompressed to make the game sound better.
