PS3 Blu Ray Drive Replacement?
May be...
I have an 80GB PS3 (The one that has backwards compatibility, sacd support, memory card readers, 4 usb's, and came with motorstorm) with a blu ray drive that doesn't read any discs. Will I be able to play PS2/PS1 games and sacd's if I replace the blu ray drive from a newer PS3, such as the 40GB or new 80GB, with my old one?If your system is less than a year old, contact Sony and tell them the problem. If you need to get the whole system replaced then demand they send you the same model back (assuming it's less than a year old and they will fix it for free).
If it' older than a year tell them to fix it and pay any charges (which would be cheaper than buying a new PS3).
If you get the 40gb or the new 80gb you lose PS2 compatibility (all PS3's can play PS1 games), you lose SACD support, you lose 2 USB ports and you lose the card reader. So paying to get it fixed, or making them send you out the same backwards compatible 80gb model is best.ARE YOU GONNA DO IT BY YOURSELF? AM SURE YOU CAN'T. CALL SONY. THEY ALSO DO OUT OF WARRANTY SERIVICES IF YOUR WARRANTY IS DONE. THEY KNOW HOW AND WHAT TO DO WITH IT. BUT IF IT'S STILL UNDER WARRANTY (1 YEAR FROM DATE OF PURCHASE) THEY WILL REPLACE IT FOR FREE. CALL 1-800-345-7669.
