It wasn't reading discs so I opened it up and cleaned the lens (with/without alcohol), blew it out, and so on. That didn't fix it so I took it further apart. I cleaned the ribbon contacts, finding the one that ran from the laser lens to a motherboard of some sort, and it had a slight internal burn so I replaced it. Still not working. I observed how the lens read and this is what it did: when I put a game in, the lens came up toward the media disc, bobbed up and down a few times (with the infared laser on) while trying to spin the disc only succeeding a tenth of the way. After that it gives up and gives me the "disc read error" message. The "worm motor" did not wind up at all to search the disc up and down either.
Help please, what else is wrong?
If it's the lens that absolutly has to be replaced I found it on ebay for $25. If you know of a cheaper place please tell. The ps2 is between the v4 and v8 versions.
Do a google search on "PS2 POT Adjustment".
Depending on the version of PS2 will determine how to adjust the POT.
This focuses the lazer to a finer point, and also moves the lens closer or further away from the disk it is reading.
You will need three things when you are ready to do this:
Silver backed game
Blue backed game: (Syphon Filter)
DVD movie.
Open up your PS2 and expose the lens by taking off the CD ROM cover.
You will notice the white cog (POT) that we will be turning 1 to 2 clicks at a time.
First thing to do is mark the cog where it is now for eay refrence. Line on the cog line on the case touch.
Press on the cog and move clockwise until you feel a slight click. Put in the silver backed game, the CD cover and turn on the PS2.
If same issue, turn another click or two. After 15-20 clicks if there is no luck, go back to dead center (Where we started from) and go the other way. You will find a point where the game loads. Once you find that point, shutdown and try the other disks. 1-5 clicks either direction should get these to load. Once you find the sweet spot, put it all back together.
BTW, since you have the fatty system, go get youreself a Network adapter and a 500GB IDE hard drive. Then go search for HDLoader.
The network adapter fits on the hard drive, the hard drive slides into your PS2.
Load all of your games on to the hard drive and play play play!!
