Just kidding, the manual says don't shut off the back switch unless the front light is red, but it doesn't say exactly what might happen if you do, beyond "malfunction." So your ps3 may end up losing pitch control and crash into a nearby planet, like usually happens with an unspecified "malfunction" in movies.
I expect this "malfunction" is more along the lines of hard disk corruption than actual hardware damage. If there's hardware in the ps3 that can be damaged by unexpected power loss, I haven't heard of it. There could be I guess. But for sure, if you shut off the power while there's a game trying to save data, your hard drive will have fits and seizures and start channeling demonic spirits.
There's only one way to know if your ps3 still works, and that is, switch it on. You may have to power it on with the front panel button rather than the ps button. If it boots up, congratulations, your ps3 is still not malfunctioning. Unless you have the Home beta installed, as Home is a malfunction in and of itself.
