Playstation 3 vs. Xbox 360?

May be...
  • Really quickly, I'm heading to Best Buy to get some ink for my printer and, feeling a little crazy, I've decided to buy one of the above gaming systems. Which should I get? I have always owned Nintendo, like 64, then Gamecube, now Wii. I left my Wii at home when I came back to college and I was really underwhelmed by it. Aside from Brawl (which I played with my Gamecube controls) and Mario Galaxy, the games pretty much bored me. In fact, I often popped in my Gamecube games to play on my Wii. So now I'd like to try something totally different. I'd like one that isn't terribly complicated. I'd like it to have a lot of fun games (I like Brothers in Arms, Resident Evil, I'd love to try something like GTA, stuff like that). Also, I'd preferably want a system that won't be phased out in two years and basically become irrelevant much like what happened with the Gamecube. So, suggest away and tell me which one I should get and why. Thanks! :)
  • Before I start explaining on which system you should get, I want to let you know that I have both systems. Its better to talk to a person who had experience with both systems…

    Here we go, based on my experience, I recommend you the PS3

    Why? Well here’s why…

    - Sony had 2 successful consoles that sold over 200 million combined, so they have the best experience with gaming consoles

    - To these people who say that Xbox 360 has better games, that’s no longer true… In 2008, PS3 had incredible exclusives being released such as Metal Gear Solid 4, WipeOut HD, LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, God of War 3, inFamous Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, etc. PLUS the ones from 2007- Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank etc. Also not to mention that both Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet are 2 of the highest rated exclusives this generation, higher than any Xbox 360 exclusives.

    - Xbox 360 was released in 2005, and its potential has been maxed out in 2006, a year later from launch, with Gears of War- here is what GeOW looks like- http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w140/... -no games will look better than this game. This picture shows how maxed out xbox 360- http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w140/... - note: Gears 1 came out in 2006 and Gears 2 is came out November 2008 and yet both games look virtually identical with different time of the day.

    - PS3 was released in 2006, and its potential is nowhere near its full potential. Look at Metal Gear Solid 4-

    http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w140/... looks so much more realistic than GeOW right? This game surely pushed the PS3 potential higher but not completely meaning new games will look better than MGS4!!!

    - PS3 supports FULL 1080p resolution. Xbox 360 can’t display 1080p but it can upscale to 1080p but you can see a big difference between true 1080p(PS3) and upscaled 1080p(xbox 360) Also another thing, PS3 supports HDMI 1.3 which has richer colors and better quality while xbox 360 supports HDMI 1.2 which is outdated HDMI…

    - With PS3, you are not getting just a gaming console, you are also getting a Blu-Ray drive. Blu-ray is the next-gen DVD. Xbox had a HD-DVD drive add-on for $200 but now HD-DVD is dead because people chose Blu-Ray as their Hi-Def format.

    - PS3 games are produced on Blu-ray Disc. There are different capacities for Blu-ray- 25gb and 50gb. However they are coming out with 100gb discs and it will be fully compatible with PS3’s Blu-Ray drive. With the huge storage, developers can add more content, better graphics, and make a longer game. Xbox 360 uses DVD-9 which only holds 9gb. Developers are starting to complain that DVD is not big enough for games.

    - Both systems offer online game however you have to pay $50 to subscribe for Xbox Live while Playstation Network offers the same exact features for free. XBL uses P2P- here is how P2P works http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w140/... so if someone has a bad connection, then the whole game will be laggy. Basically you are paying $50 for your own bandwidth. PSN has dedicated servers http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w140/... so if one has a bad connection, it will not affect the game at all. PSN also has Playstation Home which is a socializing online community. Home has incredible potential with game developers and upcoming gaming events. Home will only get better over time and it is free.

    - Xbox 360 has a reported 33% chance of breaking down… PS3 reported to have .01% chance of breaking down. This might have an impact on your decision…

    Yes the PS3 may be expensive on paper, but in reality, Xbox 360 is more expensive after buying features to match the experience PS3 offers out the box. Xbox Arcade is clearly a rip-off because it basically just comes with a console. You have to buy a HDD($100), Wi-Fi adapter($100), Xbox Live($50 every year)

    That would be $450 for Xbox Arcade. It would be $350 for Xbox Pro. You are better off forking $50 extra to buy a PS3 for $400, you will get a Blu-Ray High-Def drive compared to Xbox 360’s DVD drive, a more reliable hardware, more reliable online service(free), built-in wireless Wi-Fi, better quality games and better overall support from Sony.

    If you look at this, every person who says xbox 360 is the way to go, they never have support for their answer like some other people do with PS3. That’s simply because there are no benefits to have a xbox 360

    I think this is enough for you to know but if you want to know then feel free to email me at yankeefan9874@yahoo.com for more reasons
  • you talk a lot about games, and you said wii games are complicated... what??!!! those are cartoon games.. how complicated can they get? if wii games are already complicated for you, then you should not get an xbox or a PS3... get a brick game.. that is totally uncomplicated.

    but if you admit that you just talk too much and you don't know what you are talking about, then get a PS3. and sell your gamecube.. you don't need it if you have a wii.

    Warning.. PS3 games are ver much complicated compared to wii....
  • If you are looking for excellent ONLINE play and friend making with the most GAMES, mostly shooters then the 360 is the way to go. If you're looking for a few excellent games but so-so online then the PS3.
  • I answered in the XBOX section, but I'll repeat myself here - Get whichever system has the exclusive games you would rather play. Simple!
  • XBOX 360 live.

    its pretty cool because you can talk to your friends online. it is a little expensive tho.. but i think well worth it.
  • Asked 20 times each day.

    Look at the others instead of wasting 5 points.

    Playstation 3
  • for the amount of diversity. ps3.
  • lol get a preowned ps2 and buy all the games your little heart desires for the price of one xbox 360
  • PS3 all the way

    You can talk with your friends online on the PSN too..
  • Why you should get a PS3 and NOT a Xbox 360

    The *expected* lifetimes of current home video game consoles:

    Xbox 360--2005-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it

    Wii-2006-2010, you'll get 1 and a half years out of it

    Playstation 3-2015 (Sony said they made it to last 10 years, so 2006+10 years=2016, round it down just to be safe), you'll get 7 years out of it.

    In short, it has better reliability, multimedia capabilities, a large list of exclusives and more coming out in 2009 and in the future and it has over-the-top graphical capabilities (google “Heavy Rain”). And to those who say the Xbox 360 is cheaper, well then just look at the following list:

    With the PS3, you get:

    -A Blu-Ray player, which if you wanted one of equal value would blow at least a $700 hole in your wallet

    -Free online service

    -An ever-growing list of exclusives, like Resistance 2, LittleBig Planet, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Metal Gear Solid 4 and in the future: inFamous, Killzone 2, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain and Massive Action Game (M.A.G.—in which over 256 players will be able to play on the same map at the same time, 128 VS 128)

    -More flexible in terms of hardware, e.g. swappable HDD, USB mini cable, etc.

    -Built in, superior Wi-Fi

    -Web browser

    -A super sleek system complete with chrome trim and a slot loading disc drive

    -HDMI 1.3, Xbox 360 only has HDMI 1.2 (major difference despite only a 0.1 difference)

    With the Xbox 360, you get:

    -DVD Player/upconverter

    -Xbox live, which is $50/year, and not even worth it

    -Halo 3 and Gears of War 2 (that’s a lot of exclusives compared to the PS3, if you ask me: P)

    -Umm…can’t really say anything about non-proprietaryness, because Microsoft inflates the prices for their accessories. 120GB for $150? With the PS3, you can upgrade to 500GB for $110!

    -A 1 in 3 failure rate (it's not "if", it's "when")

    -Many people are on their 5th or 6th 360's already because of RROD, and my friend is on his 12th!

    So here’s a quick run-down of what you must buy with the PS3 and 360:

    PS3:

    Console $400

    Game $60

    Controller $55

    Charger $2-10--any USB mini cable will do

    Total: $517 ($2 USB mini cable)

    Really, if you bought all the things the PS3 offers SEPERATELY, you would be able to buy roughly 3 PS3's with that money (gaming console+computer+SUPERB Blu Ray player)

    Xbox 360:

    Console $300

    Game $60

    Controller $60

    Play and Charge kit x2 $60 (for 2 controllers)

    Xbox Live $60

    Wi-Fi $100

    Total: $640

    That’s not cheaper, so get a grip on it! The multi-platform games are using about 25% of the PS3's graphical potential. So there's lots of wiggle room in the future for much more brighter, detailed and massive environments.

    On the other hand, most multiplatform games are using about 98% of the 360’s potential. And they look the same, if not better on the PS3. At this rate in 1 year, the PS3 will have outshone the 360 graphic wise. It’s just that the 8-core Cell Broadband Processor is very complex, and takes developers time to get used to. And they are getting the hang of things. The PS3 has a very good reliability rate: only 0.2% failure rate (note the decimal), while Xbox 360's have a 30% failure rate. So, for every 1000 of both consoles produced, 2 PS3's are defective, whilst about 330 Xbox 360's are defective. The numbers speak for themselves. Many game developers have OPENLY stated that in the near future, and right now, they will use the PS3 as a lead-developing platform, and then they will port the games to the 360.

    Xbox Live VS PSN? The only thing you are missing is cross voice chat, which can easily be solved by using a telephone, or even in PSN’s V3.00 update, which we will be seeing soon enough.

    The PS3 has sold 21 million units in 2 years. The Xbox 360 has sold 28 million in 3 years. Plus a 33% failure rate, that means that 9.24 million units are either refurbished ones or replacements. So really, the amount of one-time buyers is about 19 million. So really, the PS3 has sold 21 million in 2 years, while the Xbox 360 has sold 19 in 3 years, and the PS3 has a higher face value ($199.99 vs. $399.99)

    So in conclusion, the PS3 is better—you get the most bang for your buck, and it's an incredibly advanced all-in-one home media center hub. You can even install Linux or Windows XP and use it as a computer—legally! While with the Xbox 360, Microsoft will ban your 360 from certain things, if you install the OS at all (just try to bypass the security).

    Hope this helps!

    Joke:

    Q: Why do they call it a "360"?

    A: It really does a 360:

    1) You get it

    2) It breaks down

    3) You ship it to Microsoft

    4) Wait 3-4 weeks

    5) Be happy, and start again from step 1.
  • Before starting, Best Buy if giving free $50 gift cards this WEEK ONLY if you buy a PS3 there.

    PROS:

    PS3 -

    1. Free Online, keeps getting better. Soon to match Xbox Live.

    2. Full 1080p resolution

    3. Built In Blu Ray

    4. Cheaper HardDrives to Add [320GB for $80]

    5. Comes with a USB device to charge your Controller.

    6. Internet Browser

    7. Home and Life have a lot of potential to get better, FREE also.

    8. Browse Youtube with "TV" option. [Only Wii + PS3 have this]

    9. Might make a deal with Blockbuster to make something similar to Netflix with 360.

    10. 0.2% chance of failing. Most consumer products have a 2% fail rate.

    Xbox360-

    1. Netflix.

    2. 3 year warranty

    CONS:

    PS3 -

    1. New PS3's can't play PS2 games

    2. 1 year warranty

    3. Cost $150 to fix it if passed your 1 year warranty.

    Xbox360 -

    1. 33% fail rate meaning you can't play it and if you want to fix it you have to send it to microsoft for them to fix it and you will get it back approx. 3 WEEKS and has 33% of it failing again [PS3 has 0.2%]

    2. Pay for online gaming $50 a year

    3. Have to buy many add ons

    4. Buy a recharger for controllers.

    5. Cost more for HardDrive [60GB $100]

    6. Buy Wifi [$100]

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If you buy the $199 Xbox 360, you will HAVE to buy the Hard drive which costs $100 which will be equal to the $299 one. If you want to play online also, you have to buy a Wifi Adapter for $100. After that, you have to buy a recharger for your controller which costs about $30-40 for only 1 controller.
    Xbox 360 also had this thing called "RROD" which will break your Xbox 360 and you have to send it to Microsoft for them to fix it. It takes about 3-4 weeks for them to fix it. The RROD happens in about 33% of all 360's and it happens from overheating, which means playing it too long. The PS3 only had 0.2% chance of breaking.
  • i just recently got the ps3 for Christmas and I would not recommend it for gaming, but if you are looking for a mult purpose machine i defiantly would go with the ps3. The ps3 lacks exclusive titles and most exclusives are mediocre (- Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4) Ps3 network is ok and it is excellent for a free way of playing your games online. but coming from playing xbox live i was highly disappointed with the playstation network because the party system is very complicated to work with compared with the 360 were you can stay in a party with your friends without having to actually be in the same game with each other for a example you could be finishing up a game of halo 3 and your friend sends you a invitation and party invite to play Call of Duty 4. You can join his party and talk to him while you are finishing up with you game. The major selling point of the ps3 is the blu-ray player which comes with every system. But i must say the 360 only has about 2-3 years before phasing out and the ps3 maybe 4-5 years. but while you are spending $400 on a ps3 your spending $200 on the 360 which figures out to be evenly $100 a year unless you really just don't want to be a new system at launch i would say you would get more bang for you buck on the long run with the ps3 but i would go with the 360 because of the exclusive titles and how much i love xbox live
  • 360 is good. It works well in 1080i and has a dual core processor. It has a nice selection of games. Its online costs money. It has a 40% failure rate (red lights), meaning that you have a 40% chance of your 360 breaking right off the bat. There are lots of noobs and little kids on xbox live. Xbox 360 has an attachable HD-DVD at an extra cost, but they dont even make HD-DVDs anymore. the HDD (hard drive disk) costs extra. 360 uses DVDs, which are a max of about 8 gb.
    PS3 is amazing. It runs 1080p naturally. It has a 7 core processor, each doing its own job like physics, gfx, audio, AI, ect. It is more expensive than the 360, but its going down soon. Its online is free and you can download full games, demos, blu-rays, themes, psp games, ect. on the PSN (playstation network). PS3 has playstation home, which is like an MMORPG without the fat people living in their basement with a case of chips and fresca and its free. PS3 has Blu-Ray built in. Infact the games use Bluray, which are 40gb or 80gb double written. Bluray can hold 1080p without any upscaling. Every PS3 comes with a HDD, so PS3 games are installed onto the HDD for nonstop play and super quick load times for ridiculous amounts of stuff. PS3 has a 0.02% failure rate, meaning that you have a 1 in 5,000 chance of failure. I have PS3, but I also owned 360 so i dont have a bias. PS3 also has alot of games, and all sport games are going to be made on PS3 now, meaning a better game. Also, GT5. When it is hard to differ a picture from the game, i think it speaks for itself.
    I know its a copy and paste, but i copied from myself
