Ps2 game not compatible with ps3?

May be...
  • Tried to play super monkey ball today on my ps3, did not work....I thought all ps2 games were supposed to work on ps3 as well? Anything I can do to make it work? I tried to see if it was available for download on playstation store but it wasn't there.
  • The only models that play PS2 games are:

    20GB-Discontinued, all PS2 games $500

    60GB-Discontinued, all PS2 games $600, later $550

    Old 80GB-Discontinued, 80% of PS2 games $500***

    The following DO NOT:

    40GB-Discontinued $400

    New 80GB-in stores $400

    160GB-in stores $500

    All PS3's play PSone games.

An easy way to tell if a PS3 will play PS2 games

    4USB ports=YES

2USB ports=NO (and NO means NO)

The reason is that the cost of putting the PS2 chip/CPU

and the PS2 graphics card in the PS3 was VERY expensive,

and as the PS2 only has about a year left (before it is

discontinued), Sony saw no reason to lose even more

money than they already are losing on the PS3, and

hence there is no backwards compatibility on PS3's today.

*** The old 80GB PS3 had the PS2 CPU in it, but it used software to emulate the

graphics card or GPU. This means that when it tries to play PS2 games it 1) Will play them fine 2) Will play them, but with glitches 3) Won't play them at all

The utility data or whatever it is called is software for the 80GB. The new PS3's (40GB, new 80GB, 160GB) don't have the PS2 CPU or GPU.
  • Two possible reasons. There is a list of ps2 games that will work with the ps3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PS3... the list is sort of outdated and I don't see super monkey ball on the list so chances are super monkey ball is one of the games that won't work with the ps3.

Two, not all the ps3 have the backward compatibility. Only the 60gb and the 80gb models of the ps3 have backward compatibility but the 60gb has been discontinued and sony dropped the backward compatibility for all the newer models of the 80gb models (lame I know, but they claim this will save a lot of money for them).
  • It depends on the PS3. The non-PAL region 20GB and 60GB models have a full PS2 in them and thus play all PS2 games. The older 80GB which have 4 USB ports and came bundled with Motorstorm or Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as the PAL region 60GB, use a partial emulator and part of the PS2 hardware, and thus only play about 80% of PS2 games. All other models have the rest of the PS2 hardware removed and therefore don't play PS2 games at all.

All this done to cut costs and therefore reduce the sales price, which was the biggest complaint about the PS3.
  • Here goes...

When the PS3 was released, it was 60GB and it had PS1 and PS2 game compatibility. But it was too expensive to make and not many people bought it so they made a lower budget model, the 40GB with some features removed, i.e. PS2 compatibility. But now due to popular demand they have cut prices and released an 80GB model which was previously not in our country - this one has PS2 compatibility. So really it depends on which model you have. No I did not copy this from a website.
  • Not all PS3s are compatible with PS2 games. Only the older versions (which are discontinued) have this function. These models included the old 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB which have 4 USB ports. The 80GB PS3 nowadays aren't backward compatible.
  • New PS3's cannot play PS3 games.

  • some games work but some dont and you need a 60 gig or 80 gig to play them and 60s are not made anymore
  • well last time i heard it only works for 80 gb sony is trying to make profit
