About to buy a PS3 in the next few weeks, what all do i need extra and how to setup?

May be...
  • alright, i am new to the ps3 obviously, other than an hdmi cable, what all do i need along with the console to play online, hook up to my 7.1 onkyo hts6100 etc. and how do i go about doing such a thing? any help is appreciated.

only knowledgeable people respond please, thanks!
  • In simple terms, to get the most out of the PS3: 2 HDMI cables, assuming your A/V receiver has HDMI input (one HDMI cable from PS3 to A/V receiver, one HDMI cable from A/V receiver to TV). If your A/V receiver doesn't have an HDMI input, then one HDMI cable that plugs straight to the TV.

One optical cable (for audio) from PS3 to A/V receiver. While HDMI is fine for audio, to get the most out of your audio, you will want to hook the PS3 up via an optical cable, especially since you are running a 7.1 A/V receiver.

Ethernet cable? My PS3 came with an ethernet cable, but I have been told the new ones do not. Check the contents on the box to see if the ethernet cable is included. If not, then pick one up if you don't have a wireless router.

Wireless router (higher-end the better), if you don't already have one. While it is fine to hook your PS3 up with an ethernet cable, and will get a better constant internet connection than with a low-grade wireless router, you can not use the media servers on the PS3 without Wi-Fi. If you don't care about the media servers, or don't have a laptop, then go with the ethernet cable if you don't already have a wireless router.

To sum it up: 2 HDMI cables, 1 optical cable, ethernet cable, and wireless router.
  • you would hook the audio up the same way as any other piece of equipment. Keep in mind, don't bother with an expensive hdmi cable, as the signal is digital and there is no such thing as interference. You can play online by hooking up to a router through either wifi or using a regular ethernet cable. I believe if your reciever has HDMI switching, then the surround should go through this as well, but it sounds like you may know this already.
  • some of the ps3s have wifi built in
  • You also need resident evil 5.
  • you should not buy a ps3 untill the price drop it would be foolish to buy it now and then 2 weeks later it drops to 300 bucks
  • all you need is an hdmi cable.
  • You should wait a month or two before buying a PS3. The word on the internet is that the PS3 is going to drop $100 soon mainly because the PS3 did not sell that well last year at the current price point.

Buy the 60 gb version and not the 80 gb version. The $100 difference in price is for the extra hard drive space You can easily upgrade the Hard drive to 120 gb or more by just buying a SATA drive yourself and sliding it in.

If you have a router you can use the PS3 wifi if not then you need to buy a long ethernet cable to hook your PS3 online.

If you want to hook up your PS3 to your sound system you might need a fiber optic audio out cable. You plug this into your PS3 and then to your onkyo system.

For the HDMI cable you shouldn't be spending more than $10-$20 on a HDMI cable. I am not sure if you know but with HDMI there is now snow or fuzzyness. It is all digital. You either see the image or you don't. Here is an article about that http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2007/...

Most people get their HDMI cables here at http://www.monoprice.com

I got mine there and have been using it for 2 years without any problems.

Finally, your PS3 uses a lot of electricity and thus generates a lot of heat. It should not be put in an enclosed cabinet where the heat will build up. I have my PS3 out in the open so it doesn't over heat. Mind you that it doesn't overheat like the Xbox 360 but it can be a concern if you play or watch blu ray movies a lot. If you plan on watch a lot of DVDs or blu rays on the PS3 spend the $25 and buy a remote for the PS3.
