Can the PS3 play PS2 games?

May be...
  • Let me make this simple.

    The 20GB one can - it's discontinued

The 60GB one can - it's discontinued, but it's the best one

    The 80GB MotorStorm/MGS4 bundle can - it's discontinued

    The new 80GB one can't - it's in stores

    The 160GB one can't - it's in stores

The 80GB MS/MGS4 can play about 75% of all PS2 games. The 60GB can play 99% of all PS2 games, and that makes it the best one.
  • Only certain models can play PS2 games.

The 20, 60, and old 80 (came with Motorstorm or Metal Gear Solid 4 game) gb can play PS2 games to varying degrees. Since the 20 and 60 has both the emotion chip and the PS2's GPU, they can play almost all PS2 games. The old 80 gb uses software emulation so it plays most PS2 games.

The 40, new 80, and 160 gb cannot play PS2 game disks.

To find out if your PS3 can play PS2 games, just look at the front of the PS3. If you see 4 USB ports, it can play PS2 games. If you see 2 USB ports, it cannot play PS2 games.
  • mine 40gb one doesn't.....and just go to wikipedia and read about ps3, it will tell which does what
  • You can check which PS3 models are backwards compatible on this site:

    http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...
  • only certain models can:

    40GB - No

    60GB - Yes

    80GB - Not sure

    160GB - Yes
  • I think only the 60GB system can do that.
  • why not check the Sony Ps3 site?

or use the search for questions bar

this question gets asked here like 20 times a day
