All Playstation 3 models with be able to play most or all Playstation 1 games.
The original 20 and 60gb models can play them. The original 80gb models will only play about 80% of PS2 games. All other models either have none or very limited backward compatibility for PS2 games.
All PS3 systems WILL play PS1 games though.
I'm gonna save this message because I know somebody will ask again tomorrow.
However, the current models of PS3 in stores right now can NOT play PS2 games. There is no expectation that any future PS3s will be able to play PS2 games.
The old 20GB, 60GB and 80GB models could play PS2 games, but they've all been discontinued and are no longer for sale. You may be able to find used ones on eBay.
Sony's official statement on the matter is "if you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2". Apparently a lot of people DO play PS2 games because the PS2 is outselling the PS3.
I take it I'm going to be answering this question forever too:
backward compatibility for the PS3 with PS2 games is as follows:
20GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
60GB (4 USB slots, no longer in production) - yes
80GB with 4 USB slots (no longer in production, bundled with MGS4 or Motor Storm) - yes
40GB (2 USB slots, no longer in production) - NO
80GB with 2 USB slots - NO
160GB (2 USB slots) - NO
any other up coming PS3's - NO
in short: if it has 4 USB slots, yes. if it has 2 USB slots, no.
all PS3s play PS1 games.

the download that others may refer to is for backwards compatible PS3s ONLY!!!!!!!!!!! a download will NOT make a non-backwards compatible PS3 play PS2 games. PERIOD!
"If a PLAYSTATION 3 is not backward compatible, you will not be able to add this function through any hardware (i.e., changing the hard disk drive) or software (i.e., updates, homebrew) upgrades or modifications. "
that came DIRECTLY from Sony's own website: http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...
if you do purchase a PS3 that is backwards compatible, not all games may work. to see if there are any compatibility issues with your console and a PS2 (or PS1) game, check this site: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/Co...
a backwardds compatable system will usually run you more, but plays the older games. a system that is not backwards compatable will only play ps3 games.
