Do european 80gb have backward compatibility with ps2?

May be...
  • I want to buy a playstation 3 with backwards compatibility with ps2 original games or ISO (I'm ok if it's only the originals that work). I'm in Portugal so the ones they sell are european and also they only sell the 80gb ones. Either with software emulation or hardware do the ones they sell in Portugal play ps2 games if I upgrade their firmware? And if they do do I just put them in the drive and they work or do I have to pay for some software that I download on the internet through the playstation 3 (tutorial plz)? Thx in advance

Also the sites of the ps3 I can buy:

    FNAC:

  • actually, your additional information is wrong. I mean, you said it was right, but you are wrong. that information is for the NTSC versions ONLY! that page even mentions ONLY North America! "Some PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format software titles operate on some PLAYSTATION 3 models, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. The library of games in the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software catalogs available in North America (including upcoming titles) are being verified for playability with several PLAYSTATION 3 models." that page has nothing to do with you!

backwards compatibility in the 80GB is only available in the older bundles for NTSC consoles. the only PAL version that has BC is the 60GB.

so Bull and I are RIGHT.
  • PS2 compatible 80GB version never was released in PAL (Europe, Australia, Oceania) in the first place. Besides, PS2 compatible PS3 versions aren't in production anymore anywhere in the world. It's impossible to upgrade 40GB, new 80GB and 160GB to play PS2 games. If you're really desperate - buy one from ebay (not recommended, you can get a non-working or refurbished one). You can buy PS2 separately, they aren't expensive now.
  • No, they don't make ps3's with Backwards compatibility, interested in xbox 360, that has backwards compatibility.
