Hardware failure isn't necessarily caused by overheating and you'd probably know if your PS3 was running hot.
Just send it to Sony. If you're talking about an exchange, then you're probably still in the 1 year Sony warranty so they will fix it for free provided you still have the receipt. They can get the game out for you. Your credit card number is actually on the PSN online servers and not the hard drive. It will show up if you log your PSN in on a different PS3.
EDIT: Try holding down the eject button to get the game out, or immediately after the PS3 gets power (don't wait for boot up). If you get the game out this way, I don't see why not to exchange it. Opening the PS3 to get the game out will guarantee void the Fry's warranty. Even if you can't get it out, you'll have to pay Sony $162 to fix the PS3 and get the game back, so the way I see it, exchange the PS3 and buy another copy of the game and only pay worst case the retail price.
