It seems that Sony is focusing on the long-term investment instead of the short-term investment. At the current prices, Sony can still break even and/or make a profit on the PS3 console in the long run. In addition, rumors from credible analysts claim the PS3 will remain in the $400 range, even after alleged price drops. Again, these are rumors. Theoretically, this long-term investment idea is bad business practice, however. Regarding the long-term investment, a wise man once said "in the long run, we're all dead." Basically, who cares about long-term? You're not supposed to care about the long term; you focus on the short term.

They recoup the losses from sales of games.



Sony will live with a loss because otherwise no one would buy them. People think the price is way too high. So after reducing it sales picked up. But even now people want it to be cheaper. Im not sure if Sony can live with even more losses though.



Rumours are they are bringing out a new slim version of the PS3 which has some features such as memory card ports etc missing, thus saving Sony costs. This will be a lot cheaper.

They can make money from the game sales, and they're planning on making a PS3 slim (although it's still just a rumor).

they do loose money when they make the console, but because of the highly priced games, they get a lot of money.
