PS3 Backwards Compatibility?

May be...
  • I was wondering if the 40GB PS3 could play regular DVD's and if it could play PS2 games, and if not will it be capable in the future.
  • Yes, it can play DVDs. Although ps2 games aren't b/c. Not sure if it ever will be because the 40gb ps3 doesn't have the necessary hardware. Sony also said that the ps3 can't render all of the ps2's hardware. There are sources that say they might be able to.

Also the 40gb is going to be changed/replaced with the 80gb model for the same price of $399. So I suggest waiting until August 23rd I think. Not sure.

Note: The new 80gb also will not have b/c. It's just double the space.
  • Yes, the 40gb can play DVD's but is not backward compatiable with any ps2 games but is with ps1 games, I don't think it will be BC ever with ps2 games
  • the 40 gig is backwards compatible with some ps1 games, but it wont play any ps2 games, cuz it doesnt have an emulation/emotion chip
  • it can play regular dvd's but cant play ps2 games

i doubt it will be capable in the future as it lacks the hardware
  • It isnt backwards compatable and dont think it ever will be
