While all PS3s can play PS1 games (either from downloads or by using the original disc) only the 80GB PS3 can play PS2 games. The 20 and 60GB PS3s could also play PS2 games, but they're no longer manufactured.

What does 'backwards compatible for the playstation 3 mean'?
May be...
Backwards compatibility is the ability to play games from the previous generation(s). PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 games. PS3 is backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games. The exception is the 40GB model of the PS3- it is only BW compatible with PS1 games- not PS2. It means the PS3 can play games from previous Playstations.

The 20 and 60GB PS3s could also play PS2 games, but they're no longer manufactured. it means that older games, like ones for the ps1, can work on it... it also works with the ps2 i think.... the 360 has something simalar, where xbox games will work for the 360
