What is better: Component or S-Video on the PS3?

May be...
  • I have an older tv and I PS3 and I am looking to upgrade from the standard av cables to s-video or component. It is an older rear projection sony that I plan on keep for at least a little longer before upgrading to a flat-panel with HDMI. Are there any brands to include or ignore? Thanks for your input
  • Since your TV likely isn't HD, you won't notice as much of a difference between S-Video and Component as most people, but there still will be a difference. Just as splitting the signal into two wires for S-Video improves the image quality (through reduced interference) over Composite (the standard Y/W/R), going to the three wires of Component will be better than S-Video.

Brands are largely meaningless in these types of wires.
  • Component are rather HIGHER in rank than S-video. Trust me, S-video won't look that good. Even coaxil makes it look good lol. But, yeah go for the Component cable (I own one) and plug it in! HDMI is the way to go if you want to have the highest textural graphics PS3 has to offer. Not to mention blu ray movies. -_-
  • Component is definitely better in terms of quality, but it really depends on what brand you choose! Coaxial is really good, but you'd need a converter, so you are just better off with a component cable altogether.
  • this is the hierarchy of video cables from worst to best:

composite cable - S-video cable - component cable - HDMI cable

But component cable can only handle up to 720p if your TV can handle it.

    cheers!
  • Component Video is better than S-Video.

Just like HDMI is a step up from Component.
  • No difference.
