Anyone know the name of this playstation 1 rpg? (big guy gets poisoned very early in)?

Anyone know the name of it I can't remember it, I think the main character had a pet dragon or something, then u meet up with this big guy and very early in the game he gets poisoned so you have to go through a dungeon without his help?
