Does the PS3 play ps2 games and does gamestop still sell them?

May be...
  • Cause i was wondering
  • The different PS3 models are backwards-compatible with Playstation2 games, but in varying degrees. For example, the 40GB edition of the PS3 can NOT play PS2 games, but could play all PS1 games.

Meanwhile, the 80GB edition can play PS2 games (but NOT PS1 games) through use of software emulation. Anyone experiencing difficulties with playing PS2 games on the PS3 80GB model should download the latest firmware to fix the issue. The source of this information can be found at:

Sony also offer a database of games that can be played on the different PS3 models. To search this database, go to:

In answer to your other question - PS2 games can still be bought online and in game stores, but you will usually only find them pre-owned, as they are not manufactured anymore.

    Hope this helps,

    Tom.
  • Yes it can play PS2 games, just make sure to download the latest firmware for the PS3 and Game Stop should sell what you need.
  • the 40gb ps3 can NOT play ps2 games but the bigger hardware can!
