How does the Playstation 3 do a "system update" without being connected to?

May be...
  • the internet? Is it though the the game you put in? Right now I am "updating" my PS 3 with version 2.6 (or something) without it being connected to the internet. It prompted me to update when I put in a new game (Fight Night Round 4), which leads me to believe that this is where it is getting its update from.
  • Sometimes it can be through certain games--especially if those games got released after a major firmware update and your system has not been updated in a while. In those cases, the game will act as the agent to updating your system. Of course, the disadvantage with using the game method is that you could possibly still be behind in firmware updates compared to what is currently available over the network. For example, Fight Night's update is (if it is 2.6, like you mentioned) is outdated to what firmware is out as of now, which is 2.80.

Another way you can update your system's firmware is if you use a computer and usb thumb/flash drive to install the firmware from the playstation website. Then when you go onto your ps3 you can go to the 'Settings' menu on the XMB and go to 'System update'. Once select that option it will ask you to select your update method--you can either choose the internet or a 'storage media' (meaning something like a usb thumb/flash drive). Usually those that don't have a stable (or no) ps3 internet connection will use the usb method.
  • You are correct. Certain games require a certain version of the system or higher and if your system isnt the version that meets the games requirements, the cd will update your Ps3 with a patch that it carries.

I hope that helps clear thing up

I know all this because i have a few games that required updating.
  • Here go to this website; you'll need the things listed to download the update to a USB drive, and the on to your ps3. ( It's the official Platstation website):

or go to this website to learn more about updating your ps3 in general:

  • you are exactly right, I think all games have the most up to date update available at the time of release

as you load the disc it'll use that to update your system, if you didn't already have that update. That way they make sure you have all the drivers necessary to play.
  • just like PSP some ( if not all games ) have the latest system update at the time that game was released
  • No. It uses the internet connection to update itself, not through the game.
  • It can access the internet without your permission, even when its turned off
